Expedite Your Marriage Certificate
Did you know it can take up to 12-14 weeks for your marriage to be registered and for you to receive your Ontario marriage certificate? Can’t wait that long? You may not have to! Follow these six steps* to request the marriage office to expedite your marriage certificate. If your request is approved, you should receive it within 2-6 weeks.
Acquire your marriage license from City Hall or your municipal office. Note: It’s only valid for 90 days from the date of issue. A marriage license application can be downloaded here.
Apply for your marriage certificate. On the day of your wedding, apply for your marriage certificate online. Make note of your order number because you’ll need it later!
Write a proof of urgency letter. The letter should clearly state the reason you are expediting your marriage license in order to receive your certificate. Include your marriage certificate order and marriage license number. Here is a great sample letter written by The Marrying Lady.
Gather your supporting document(s). Scan and print any documents that support the reason you are expediting your marriage certificate. For example: PR application, work/student visa, airline tickets, letter of employment, etc.
Bring all of the papers to your wedding officiant on your wedding day: your license, letter of urgency, and supporting document(s).
